Born and reared in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, James Yates acquired a love for nature and the outdoors quite naturally. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina, and received his post-graduate medical education at MUSC, Columbia Presbyterian College of Medicine, and University of Southern California at Irvine. He recently retired from the practice of orthopedic surgery in Conway, South Carolina, after nearly thirty years.
The outdoors whispered softly in his ear through all his working years and boyhood memories of fishing for bass and panfish were reawakened on a family trip to Montana a number of years ago. The beauty of trout and the challenge of learning to cast a fly rod lead him to freshwater fly fishing, then on to the salt, where he discovered bonefish, tarpon, permit, and our own native redfish. He has travelled extensively with fly rod in hand, though much time has been spent in our nearby marshes pursuing redfish, and the trout streams of the mountains of North Carolina.
A lifelong lexophile, recounting his many adventures in writing has produced a number of outdoor magazine articles, columns, and a blog, Castingawayblog, found online at www.castingawayblog.wordpress.com.
